September 11: Speculative Fiction as Spell Work
Writing our way into a more optimistic future
Virtual writing workshop on Zoom
One of the most powerful gifts a writer has is imagination, and one way writers throughout history have used that power is to write about new imagined futures and help others see the possibilities of what could be.
As we face increasing authoritarian rule and an escalating climate crisis, the work of building a better world has never been more vital.
In this generative workshop, we’ll get inspiration from speculative fiction authors who have conjured utopias, matriarchies, communal societies, and more. After an energy healing meditation, we’ll write together—and learn how we can use our own imaginative power for good.
September 20: Dayton Writer & Author’s Symposium: Demystifying Publishing
Dayton Metro Library
Ever wonder what role a publisher plays in getting a book from a writer's desk to bookstore shelves? Join us for an informative and engaging session that pulls back the curtain on the publishing industry. Whether you're an aspiring author, a curious reader, or simply interested in how the literary world works, this program will explore the many responsibilities of publishers, including editing, design, marketing, distribution, and more. We'll discuss the differences between traditional, indie, and self-publishing models, and give insight into how books are selected, shaped, and brought to life.
October 6-November 3: Writing with the Senses
Upper Arlington Parks & Rec
Sight, smell, sound, taste, touch—our senses are how we experience the world and access memories. Infusing your writing with sensory details helps ensure your writing connects emotionally with readers. Drawing inspiration from masters of sensory writing including Diane Ackerman and Amy Tan, we explore techniques for working sensory detail into your poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction. Each generative writing session focuses on one of the five senses.
